How do you fix the Peloton clicking noise?

If we search the Peloton forums, we find that this is quite a common problem among new Peloton users. So, the first thing to know is not to worry about it if you have recently purchased the bike.

Just like any exercise equipment, Peloton may also make some random noises when it’s new. However, if you have been using it for quite some time and then it starts making a clicking noise, you shouldn’t ignore it.

If you want to know how to fix that characteristic clicking sound especially when you move from seated to standing positions, you are in the right place. Here we will discuss the most common cause of such a noise and how to fix it so you can fully enjoy your next spin class.

Causes of a Clicking Noise On Your Peloton Bike

There are many bike parts that might be contributing to the clicking noise. So, it’s a good idea to check all of them one by one. Here is a list of parts you should be inspecting in order to troubleshoot this problem.

1. Pedals

If the sound seems to be coming from the pedal area, you need to check if the cleats are tightly attached to your shoes. You can try tightening the screws of the cleats and then getting on the bike once again to see if the sound has disappeared.

If the sound is still there, you need to check the pedal itself. It is known as something called pedal squeaking and it can be addressed by using a bike lubricant on the pedals. The parts you need to lubricate include where the cleats sit and also underneath the pedal.

Another area that might need lubrication is the screw where the pedal fits into the crank. But for this, you will have to unscrew the pedal from the crank and then lubricate it.

2. Cleats

Sometimes just tightening the cleats doesn’t cut it. So, another thing you could try especially if you have been using the bike for quite some time now is to unscrew the cleats and clean and re-grease each and every bolt.

Put them back on and see if the squeaking has subsided. Some people also report that when their cleats are old and worn out, they start hearing that clicking noise. So, if that’s the case, you may try replacing the cleats.

3. Bike Imbalance

If the feet of your bike are somehow not level, the bike may be producing a random sound when you ride it. Peloton refers to this maintenance step as Stabilizing the Bike and it involves adjusting the six feet of the bike.

You can check if you need to stabilize your bike if it rocks and wobbles when you hold it. Adjust the four outer feet by lowering them until they touch the ground. All four feet should be firmly resting on the ground to make sure they won’t make the bike wobble and make a noise.

4. Seat

Sometimes the clicking sound seems to be coming from the saddle especially when you get off the bike. The best solution would be to tighten the bike seat or use a lubricant under the seat as we did for the pedals.

When tightening the seat, make sure it is parallel to the ground. For lubricating the seat, you need to remove the seat from the bike.

5. Belt Area

At times the squeaking might also be coming from the steel belt area and this can be easily addressed by spraying some lubricant in that area. The belt is located on the right side and it has a plastic cover over it.

Take off the plastic guard and lubricate the area using a good-quality lubricant meant specially for bike maintenance.

6. Flywheel Imbalance

The purpose of a flywheel is to balance power with comfort. At the same time, it’s one of the most important components of a spin bike because it has to endure extreme pressure and therefore it should offer smooth rotation.

The maximum weight a Peloton bike can hold is 135 kg or 297 lbs and the weight of its flywheel is 18kg. When there is a flywheel imbalance, it may move faster or slower than it should. And this can also give rise to a clicking sound when you work out.

Ways to Fix a Squeaking Peloton

Now that you are aware of the most common causes of a clicking sound on your Peloton bike, it’s time to rectify the issue and get rid of it once and for all. Here is a summary or breakdown of the methods you can try to fix this problem.

Method #1 – Using Lubrication

As a regular maintenance step, don’t forget to lubricate different parts of the bike as well as your cleats and where they attach to the pedal at least once a month. Lubrication also helps to tighten loose or worn-out parts and increase their lifespan.

To lubricate the seat, you will have to remove it first. It is also recommended to remove the pedal from the crank arm and lubricate it. And finally, you can lubricate the belt area after removing the plastic cover that protects it.

Method #2 – Replacing the Cleats

Worn-out cleats are often a cause of a clicking noise that comes from the pedal area. It’s easier to tell if your road bike cleats have worn out completely and need replacement.

But when it comes to an indoor spin bike, the best way to tell if your cleats should be replaced is when you find it difficult to unclip from the pedals or you experience an accidental release or when the pedals start to squeak.

Some cleats come with wear indicators that tell you when they should be replaced. However, you can also consider replacement when you have completed 3,000 to 5,000 miles on your bike.

Method #3 – Tightening Loose Parts

This is again a recommended maintenance step, especially for parts that come loose after every ride. Pedals are required to be tightened up to 25 lb-ft of torque. Using the hex key included with the bike, you can easily tighten up the screws located on the base of the pedal.

This step should be performed after every 3 to 5 rides. In addition to the pedals, you should also tighten up the cleats after every ride and the Peloton seat to make sure it doesn’t move from side to side.

Method #4 – Replacing Damaged Parts

Sometimes it becomes inevitable to replace damaged parts, such as the pedals, the belt, and the flywheel. If you have tried everything else and it doesn’t seem to work, it might help to replace a faulty flywheel.

However, while other parts may not seem very difficult to replace, the flywheel is a component that must be handled by professionals only. So, we recommend contacting Peloton support to handle it for you.

Peloton recommends replacing the pedals annually as part of regular maintenance. While pedals are fairly easy to replace, you may need expert help to replace a flywheel. Nevertheless, if you want to try it yourself, then make sure you loosen the blades of the flywheel first by tapping the edge with a hammer.

Method #5 – Contacting Peloton Support

If the clicking sound doesn’t seem to go away even after taking all the precautionary measures, performing maintenance, and inspecting your cleats and pedals, it’s time to contact Peloton support.

Peloton offers support 7 days a week between 9 AM to 9 PM ET. Visit the website and open their webchat option or call them up directly on their phone number. Another way is to send an email at support@onepeloton.com if their live chat option is not available.

How to Care For Your Peloton Bike

Proper maintenance ensures the long life of your Peloton bike and its parts and components. With the exception of the pedals, shoes, and cleats, other parts shouldn’t require replacement if you care for them on a regular basis.

It is recommended to clean the frame of the bike after every ride using a gentle cleanser or just a damp cloth or a wipe. This is to remove the sweat and dust and to make sure there aren’t any bad smells or odors.

In addition to this, it is also advised to keep your pedals, seat, and cleats tightened up. Inspect these parts regularly to see if they are worn out and need replacement. It is also a good idea to keep lubricating them every now and then.

It is also possible to get your bike serviced by a Peloton technician to make sure all parts are running smoothly. Getting in touch with Peloton support is not difficult and you can also seek their help when there is an issue you cannot resolve on your own.

It’s recommended to record a video of the part you think is not functioning properly and send it to Peloton support via email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lubricant should I use on my Peloton bike?

As a regular maintenance step, it is recommended to use Pedal & Cleat Dry Film Lubricant by Finish Line on your pedals, cleats, under-seat, and belt area of your bike to make sure these areas keep running smoothly.

This product has actually been recommended by Peloton users who have tried and tested it on their bikes.

Why does a Peloton bike squeak?

Loose, shaky, or broken parts could be contributing to a squeaking Peloton bike. Worn out pedals and cleats may also be causing those annoying sounds. And finally, if your bike or flywheel are imbalanced, you may be hearing some clicking noises that distract you from the task at hand.

What causes loose or shaky bike parts?

Not maintaining your bike on a monthly and yearly basis may cause some parts to come loose and start making noises. Sometimes putting too much pressure on the handlebar also causes loose parts. It is recommended to use the right resistance settings for your exercises to avoid this.

Why is my Peloton so wobbly?

There can be two reasons behind a wobbly Peloton. First, the bike is placed over a carpet and second, its outer feet need to be stabilized. You may want to use gym tiles over your carpeted floor to stabilize the bike.

How to tell if the Peloton pedals need tightening?

If it is too easy for you to clip into the pedals, it’s time to tighten up the pedal tension. This can be easily achieved with the help of the 3mm Allen key that comes with the bike. Peloton also recommends tightening up the pedals as well as the seat and your shoe cleats at least once a month for a smooth ride.

Final Verdict

Peloton is designed to last a long time and it offers a near-perfect cycling experience to its users. As such, it shouldn’t be making any random clicking noises that may distract you while taking a ferocious spin class. However, just like any other machine this bike also needs regular inspection and maintenance to make sure it runs smoothly.

So, if you hear a clicking or squeaking noise that wouldn’t go away on its own, it’s time to find out its source and make it disappear once and for all. You can try the methods discussed in this post to fix the problem after finding its cause.

However, if the sound is still there, you may also decide to contact Peloton support. Many people do that especially new Peloton users because they have no idea what might be the cause of the sound.

It is also a good idea to perform a few maintenance steps every now and then to ensure your bike keeps running smoothly year after year.
