Peloton Seat Height: How to Adjust the Peloton Bike Seat

One of the first steps to perform after receiving your Peloton bike is to adjust the saddle height. The reason why people are able to spend so much time on the bike daily is simply that they have adjusted the seat to a comfortable position.

If the height is not adjusted according to your stature, you will never be able to enjoy the classes no matter how interesting or thrilling they are.

However, when adjusting the Peloton bike seat, you need to adjust both the height and the depth to ensure a completely comfortable ride. It is recommended to set the height of the seat adjacent to your hip bone when you’re standing next to it.

Once you manage to adjust the seat height and depth according to your comfort level, you will experience a huge difference in how the bike feels. Not only will you be able to spend more time on the bike but will also see that you no longer feel any joint or muscle pain.

Since a lot of people experience problems with adjusting their bike seats, I decided to write this guide. We will not only discuss the step-by-step method on how to adjust the Peloton bike seat but also how to check whether the height you set is the right height.

So, without wasting further time, let’s get started with this guide.

How the Adjust the Peloton Bike Seat

Peloton allows its users to adjust the bike settings for a more comfortable ride. Since the bike is designed for both men and women with heights ranging from 4 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 5 inches, there are many settings that you can change.

There is a series of tutorials available through the touchscreen itself that you can easily follow to tweak your bike according to your height and stature. These include adjusting the handlebar height and adjusting your seat position among other things.

In this guide, we will only look at how to adjust the saddle height and reach, which comes under adjusting the seat position. In addition, we will also look at how to adjust the handlebar height because it should also be adjusted according to the seat height.

So, here are the steps you need to follow.

Step #1 – Adjust the Seat Height

Stand next to the bike and locate the lever below the seat to turn it to the left. Now bring the seat to the desired height and hold it here. Although you will need to test the newly adjusted height to see if it’s comfortable, a general rule of thumb is to align the seat with your hip bone when you’re standing next to the bike.

When you have the desired height, turn the lever again but this time to the right. A problem you could experience at this stage is the lever sticking out at the ankle. To test this, you need to get on the bike and start pedaling. If you think the lever is coming in the way, pull the lever out and let it drop to a position where it is out of your way.

Step #2 – Set the Seat Depth

Now you need to set the seat depth, which is also known as seat reach. This is a horizontal scale located below the seat. To adjust it, you need to loosen the lever located below the seat to the left. Now slide the seat to the desired position and then tighten the lever back.

This adjustment will bring you closer or farther away from the handlebars. If you are short, you will need to bring the seat forward. On the contrary, bring it back if you are tall and you need the handlebars farther away from your body.

However, Peloton recommends setting the seat approximately in the middle of the scale if you’re adjusting it for the first time. Get on the bike once again and see if the ride is comfortable. It is always possible to make adjustments later on so don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time around.

Step #3 – Adjust the Handlebar Height

This is also an important step particularly if you have changed the seat position in the previous steps. Loosen the lever on the front of the bike and stand in front of the bike seat. Now put your forearms under the handlebars and gently lift them up.

Tighten the lever when you think the handlebars have attained the right height. Peloton recommends adjusting the height to its top-level if you’re using the bike for the first time. After a few test rides, you can bring it down to a more comfortable position.

Step #4 – Check if the Adjustments Feel Right

The next step is to start a test ride to see if everything feels comfortable. Get ready by clipping into your bike and holding your handlebars while bringing your right foot to the 6 o’clock position. At this pedal position, your right knee should have a slight bend.

If you feel there is no bend, you need to lower the seat slightly more. And if you think the bend is a little too big, you need to raise your seat height.

For checking the depth of the seat, bring your right foot to a 3 o’clock position. In this position, your knee should lie above the ball of your foot. If the knee is behind, you need to move your seat forward. On the other hand, if it’s ahead of your foot, you need to move the seat backward.

Next, start pedaling and see if the ride is comfortable. The above recommendations for the adjustments of the seat and handlebars do not have to be strictly followed. This is because everyone has a different physique and they might enjoy more in a position that is different from normal.

How to Tighten Your Bike Seat?

One of the maintenance steps to make sure your bike keeps running smoothly for a long time is to occasionally tighten the pedals as well as the bike seat.

First, check that your seat is parallel to the ground. Then use a socket wrench to tighten the bolts located under the seat. You will have to turn the wrench to the right to tighten the bolt and to the left to loosen it.

Once this step is done, your seat should be securely held in its position without any sideways movement. Some people also experience the seat bending slightly to the left or the right. This problem can also be resolved using the same method.

First, loosen the bolts and bring the seat to a parallel position. Once the angle is adjusted, tighten the bolts once again. This step helps to prevent seat sores, which is a common problem nowadays and it happens when your weight is not evenly distributed on the bike seat.

Things to Remember When Adjusting the Peloton Bike Seat

Both the height and depth of the bike seat have their corresponding scales so you can see what position your seat currently is at. Note down these positions before you try to adjust your bike seat. If you don’t feel comfortable in the new position, it will be possible to bring the seat back to where it was initially.

It is also quite common to feel uncomfortable with the new position at first. This is nothing to worry about. Keep in mind that the recommendations given by Peloton support are for your own good and they are meant to prevent injuries, discomfort, and pain in your knee joint and lower back while riding.

Test ride the bike a few times before deciding if you need to adjust the seat back to its initial position or if the new position is more comfortable.

Make sure you tighten all the bolts and levers adequately before attempting to ride the bike again. And when you get on the bike make sure it’s completely stable and doesn’t wobble right or left. The handles should neither be too loose nor too tight.

If you follow these steps carefully, you can rest assured that your bike is now in an optimal position to ride.

Frequently Asked Questions about Peloton Seat Height

Should I adjust the height or the depth first?

It is recommended to adjust the Peloton bike seat height before adjusting the depth. This is because saddle height is more important than its depth. In fact, you don’t have to do a test ride before adjusting the reach. Peloton recommends adjusting it in the center first because it could be the right depth for everyone.

I have made the recommended benchmark adjustments but the seat still doesn’t feel comfortable. Why is that?

It’s natural to feel uncomfortable in a new seat position at first. This is because you have been used to riding with the previous setting and it will take time to get used to the new settings. It’s a good idea to make the adjustment in small changes instead of making a huge change at once.

How to check if I have adjusted the seat depth correctly?

Peloton recommends putting your elbow on the nose of the bike seat and then lying the arm flat till your fingertips touch the handlebars. If your hands are touching the bars, the depth is fine. If they are not touching, you need to bring the seat forward.

What do you do when you think the seat position is now correct?

It is recommended to write down the adjustment numbers where you think the seat is in an optimal position. This is particularly useful when you share the bike with other people and may have to adjust it before every ride.
You can see the two scales adjacent to the bike seat. One of them is vertical, which is for adjusting the height and the other one is horizontal, which is for adjusting the depth. The handlebars also have their own scale underneath them.
You need to write down these three readings once you think the seat position is totally comfortable according to your height and physique.

Can I use a bike seat cover for my Peloton seat?

Bike seats can cause seat sores if you sit on them for a long time. However, the real joy and thrill of indoor cycling would never be experienced if you don’t ride for 45 to 60 minutes every day. So, what to do if the seat feels uncomfortable and causes seat sores?
You can go for a bike seat cover designed especially for a spinning bike to get around this issue. There are gel-padded covers available out there that make the seat quite comfortable.
Search for the best seat cushions for Peloton and you will get hundreds of results. Choose a product that fulfills your requirements and you’re good to go!

Final Thoughts

Adjusting the bike seat position is one of the crucial steps you need to perform after you buy the Peloton bike. It becomes even more important when you have to spend more than 60 minutes every day on the bike.

The seat height should be considered first because it will determine if you are comfortable on the bike and can easily pedal. Seat depth can be easily adjusted after you adjust the height after checking if your knee and foot are properly aligned.

As a rule of thumb, just check that your knees are not touching the handlebars and they are only slightly bent when you move the pedal to a specific position.

It is also recommended to tighten the bolts located underneath the bike seat every once in a while to make sure the seat doesn’t bend to one side.

In this article, we looked at the different steps to adjust the seat position and the height of the handlebars. Follow these steps closely and I’m sure you will feel a huge difference in how the bike feels when you ride it. You will also be able to increase your ride time when the seat position is comfortable.

All the best!
